The diptera get their scientific name from the fact that adults possess only two wings; Di- (two) ptera (wings). The Diptera constitute one of the largest and most diverse insect orders. It is estimated that there are than more than 3,500 species of aquatic and semiaquatic Diptera in North America (McCafferty 1981). Common aquatic dipterans include:
