2008 Schedule

The Big Rock picnic area on the Middle Fork of Beargrass Creek in Louisville’s Cherokee Park is used for swimming and wading in summer, but it’s located in a Combined Sewer area that overflows to the stream when it rains. SRWW volunteers sample the stream at Big Rock for bacteria five times a month. Results are posted quarterly on a kiosk maintained by Louisville Metro Parks (picture above). The Little Kentucky River flows through a still-rural area of the Salt Basin that is in the center of the “Golden Triangle” formed by the sprawling cities of Louisville, Lexington, and Northern Kentucky. SRWW volunteers in the watershed partner with the Little Kentucky Conservancy District, the managers of Jericho Lake, to educate schoolchildren and monitor potential threats to the river’s health.
