National Water Monitoring Day

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Clean Water Act, and to demonstrate the widespread involvement of volunteers who care about their streams and rivers, the American Clean Water Foundation and other organizations are sponsoring a unified water quality monitoring day. We hope you will participate:

1.  What are we measuring?

Dissolved Oxygen, pH, Temp, Water Clarity (in JTUs) and, in some cases, fecal coliform.

2.  What equipment can I use?

You can use the Watershed Watch or Water Watch testing equipment or purchase a low-cost testing kit offered by the national organizers.  If you can't measure all the items, at least do what you can and get your stream on the map!

3.  How do I get started?

  • Register your site right now!  Register online at the National Monitoring Day Web site: http://www.yearofcleanwater.org/events/volunteer.htm
  • Plan your outing to the stream for Oct. 16, 17, 18 or 19, 2002.
  • Report your data as soon as you can after collection.
  • Where can I get more information?

Visit the national Web site listed above or:

4.  INTRODUCE A FRIEND TO YOUR STREAM.

A volunteer has suggested to all that you bring a friend unfamiliar with Watershed Watch or the Clean Water Act to help take measurements at your chosen site. Help to promote these efforts to a wider community by bringing more people to the water's edge.

4.  Let us know your plans.  If you have any questions, please give us a call at 1-800-928-0045 Ext. 473 or e-mail us at kywwp@igc.org.
